Alcohol - Mans Oldest Drug

This week is the perfect time to learn and teach some truths about alcohol. Anyone who has a teen who will soon be going to a prom or on spring break vacation should take the opportunity to share some simple truths. Doing so could be life- saving.

Through the ages, alcohol has been one of the pleasures of life. Since the Stone Ages, alcohol has played a role in human culture and has been used for medicinal, religious and social purposes.
The Greeks promoted moderation in drinking and temperance was praised by Plato. As the Roman Empire started to decay the abuse of alcohol became more rampant. Throughout much of history the use or misuse of alcohol is a reflection of the society at the time.

And so it goes – Social and financial pressures and social disorder now find us in a world that promotes drinking. The number of alcohol abusers of all ages is increasing.
Young people raid their parents liquor cabinets, Workers meet at the bar after high pressure jobs and older people seek alcohol as a relief for loneliness.

No matter the age or social condition overdrinking contributes to cirrhosis, pancreatitis, brain damage and destruction of the nervous system. In the present time, the majority of traffic deaths are caused by driving under the influence.

There are other facts to consider before stepping out for a party. Temperance can guarantee a good time, while the vomiting and even coma or death that too much alcohol can cause, will ruin the party for everyone

Loss of self- control, depression, loss of coordination, poor judgment, double vision and blackouts are also consequences of alcohol abuse and should be known.

Long term use may cause cancer, gastrointestinal problems, diarrhea, ulcers, malnutrition and high blood pressure.

Withdrawal is not much fun either with the hallucinations, seizures and the rapid pulse rate.

Be aware and make others aware during this Alcohol Awareness Week!

Newsflash

Alcohol abuse and dependency is a very severe problem in this country today. There are many Americans who are on the borderline with their alcohol intake, perhaps because the level of stress in the average American life has gone up quite a bit in the last ten years. People, who become addicted to alcohol, usually do so because there is some problem that they feel unable to handle in their life. Because of this they resort to alcohol to help numb their negative emotions and to get their mind off of their problems for a while. The thing is that when the person comes off of the alcohol, they no longer feel better about whatever it was that was going on; in most cases they usually actually feel worse.
When a person becomes an alcoholic, what usually happens is instead of the person finally getting to the point where they are like “Ok I need to fix this problem now and get everything together and get on the ball,” the person continues to try to drink all their problems away. This does nothing for actually fixing the problems that they are encountering; instead it usually makes them much worse and actually adds more problems to the person’s plate.
