Narconon Program Discusses Urban Legends Concerning Teens and Alcohol
Recently there was a story in the news where reports were made of young teens supposedly using very strange methods to become inebriated. The story said that there were teens that were soaking tampons in vodka and then inserting the tampons into their vaginas or rectums depending on whether they were male or female. The reason that kids where supposedly doing this was because the blood vessels in these two different orifices would absorb the alcohol much more quickly than the alcohol would be absorbed in the stomach. It was stated that kids were also trying to avoid having alcohol that was detectable on their breath. It has come to the attention of the Narconon program that this is most likely an urban legend.
There have been a few females who have tried inserting vodka tampons into their vaginas to verify the validity of this claim and all participants said that they were not sure if they actually got any type of inebriation out of the experience or not. They said that the most noticeable sensation that they felt was a very strong irritation and burning in their vaginas. One of them said that she was not sure if she left the tampon for in long enough for it to be effective because the burning was so strong that it was unbearable. Another said that she was able to bear the pain for long enough to leave the tampon in for an hour but she did not think that she felt drunk from it. None of the females that tried it were given blood alcohol tests to determine if the alcohol was indeed absorbed into their blood stream from this method. There where no known males who have tried this method of getting drunk, but Narconon assumes that if there where that they would have had a similar experience i.e. burning sensations etc.
Another claim that authorities are making is that kids are practicing another method of consuming alcohol through their rectum. This method is called butt chugging and supposedly kids are giving themselves what is equivalent to a beer enema. This method is also highly likely to be an urban legend as well. When someone receives an enema the body’s natural reaction is to void the bowels of all substance contained therein. The reason that people usually get enemas is because they are suffering from constipation and it relieves them of this ailment. Very little alcohol would be absorbed in this manner before the body would expel it back out. In addition, this method would be very messy and the person would have to do the procedure in the bathroom to avoid fecal matter getting all over the place. It does not seem likely that there would be many adolescents that would be interested in voiding their bowels in front of their friends in this manner and it also seems unlikely that this would be a practice that a teenager would participate in by themselves.
Risks of Alcohol are Dangerous Enough
It is not known why these stories are getting so much attention in the media when they are very unlikely to be true. It seems to be a way of giving teens a new set of very bad ideas that it is very unlikely they would have thought of themselves. There may be a few teens who have tried these methods of alcohol consumption as a result of these stories, but doubtful that there where many, if any, who tried them before simply because they would not work very well.
The risks of alcohol consumption and addiction are very serious. Although alcohol is one of the few mind altering drugs that are legal in America today without a prescription, alcohol is one of the most dangerous drugs available, causing one fourth of all deaths in America per year. The media does not need to fabricate ridiculous stories of teens putting themselves in danger with alcohol. There are enough true stories of teens killing themselves everyday from consuming alcohol that ones that are so obviously made up are unnecessary. Kids have automobile accidents while under the influence, they get alcohol poisoning, and they have other alcohol related accidents all the time.
In addition to reducing a person’s judgment to the point where they put themselves in danger while drinking, alcohol can cause much damage to many organs in the body if consumed to excess over a long period of time. Then there is the risk of becoming physically addicted to alcohol. When a person is quite physically addicted to alcohol and they try to quit drinking the experience can be very dangerous. Alcohol withdrawal is one of the few drug withdrawals that can be potentially fatal. A person is more likely to become physically addicted to alcohol when they start consuming it as a child or adolescent. If the media wants to come up with a story about the dangers and risks of teens consuming alcohol there are enough out there that are true and also very scary that it is certain that they would make headlines.
There are certain to be copycats who are going to try this method of using alcohol but it is doubtful that the participants are going to actually be able to become inebriated from them. With the vodka tampon method, not enough vodka would be able to be absorbed in the system in the manner and with the butt chugging method, the body would void itself of the alcohol almost immediately, most likely rendering the method ineffective.
Parents do have plenty of concerns to worry about when it comes to their teens and consuming alcohol. Alcohol consumption can be one of the most serious dangers that kids of adolescent age can face these days. Parents need to be vigilant and communicative with their children in regards to the risks associated with drunk driving and alcohol related illnesses and injuries. Kids need plenty of attention and activities that they can participate in that are fun and will build their self confidence. This is a proven way to prevent kids from using drugs and alcohol.
