Narconon Drug Abuse Program

Narconon and Drug Addiction

The Narconon Program is a very unique program that addresses addiction in a way that no other treatment center does. Narconon is very successful at helping people overcome their substance abuse problems and there is a number of reasons why this is so. In this article we are going to discuss why the Narconon program works so well.

The Anatomy of Addiction

Drug addiction can appear to be a very complex problem. The people that are addicted usually have a lot of complex problems, or at least it often feels that way to the individual. The basic reason that people use and get addicted to drugs is because they are running away from some type problem or pain that they are unable to confront and handle. Drugs seem like the perfect solution to them because when someone gets high they usually, at least temporarily, are able to ignore the negative things that are going on around them.
This can turn into a really viscous cycle and the person may not realize it at the time. When a person is using drugs, life is going to keep going on around them whether they like it or not. When a person is distracting themselves from a certain upset or problem by using drugs and taking a time out on life, often there are other problems that are being created while they are doing this.
Once the person comes off of the drug they can often find that there are now a whole new list of problems that need to be handled and the person can then become overwhelmed. At this point the person usually has one of two options. One, they can buckle down, do what they have to do to fix whatever it is that is going on and survive, or two, they can say forget it, I cant deal with it and I don’t want to think about it. I am just going to go get high instead. This basically is the anatomy of drug addiction.
The Anatomy of Relapse

After a while a person may decide that they want to fix their problems and deal with life and try to get sober because they know that this is the only way that they are going to be able to handle life. They decide that they want to go to a treatment program and try to get a handle on this addiction. They often go and do very well and learn a lot of things about addiction and what someone needs to do to handle life and stay away from drugs. Most of the time in these situation the person is beginning to take care of themselves and they are starting to feel better because of it. They are probably eating much better than they have in a while and they are getting the mental and emotional support that they need in the form of the treatment center. They start to build their confidence and begin to think to themselves “ Wow! I am really starting to feel good about my life and my family and I think I can do this. I really think that I will be able to handle life without using drugs anymore and this is a decision I feel good about. I am so sick of screwing up my life and everybody else’s life and finally I think I won’t have to anymore.”

Then the person gets out of rehab. Their family is happy and they are happy and everybody has hope for life again. The person gets a job and starts to support themselves. They start going to family functions and everything seems like it is going to be ok.

Then the person gets into fight with their significant other or their boss or some other person that means a lot to them. Their blood pressure gets all high and they get stressed out and the next thing that they and the rest of their family know is they have disappeared and are using drugs again. They come back home but everybody knows what they did and are very disappointed. The addict is even more disappointed in him or herself. He or she feels that they have let everybody down after giving everyone so much hope. But worst of all the addict wonders if there is ever going to be a way for him or her to get clean and stay clean.

What the Addict Does Not Know Can Hurt Them

When a person uses drugs they act as a poison or toxin to the body. Most drugs have the capability of killing a person if too much is ingested. When ingested drugs, like all other substances that are taken into the body, go through a process called metabolization. This is the process where the body takes a substance and turns it into a form that can be utilized and then flushes the rest out of the system, mostly through the sweat, urine and feces. What is left is called a metabolite. Bread breaks down into glucose, heroin breaks down into morphine. When a person uses drugs over an extended period of time and in large amounts, the body is not able to flush them out as fast as they are going in. The drug metabolites that are not flushed out through the sweat, urine or feces are often found to be absorbed into the fatty tissue. Drug metabolites can stay locked inside the fatty tissue for up to seven to ten years. This can be very disastrous for a person who is trying to get off of drugs because these stored metabolites have the capability of causing cravings in a person. This usually happens when a person is under some sort of stress, be it mental or physical. The addict does not often know why when they get stressed out they have overwhelming cravings; they just know that they do. Continued in Part Two
